Job title: Street Lighting Technical Assistant
Location: Stafford; with potential for home working
Salary: £21,269 - £23,953 per annum
Contract type: 37 Hours per week | Full time | Permanent
We’re happy to talk about flexible working
About the role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a driven and enthusiastic individual to start a career in the Street Lighting team at Staffordshire County Council.
The team looks after approximately 108,000 street lighting assets across Staffordshire to ensure that roads and footways are safe and accessible for road users and communities. The assets include street lighting columns, subway lighting, illuminated road signs and bollards, 20mph school signs and other related equipment on the highway. In addition to maintaining the existing street lighting assets, the team ensure that new street lighting assets on developments and road improvements meet the correct standards and are properly installed.
The street lighting sector is innovative and continues to make technological advances. The County Council are currently investing in changing approximately 47,000 existing streetlighting heads to new LED heads. This will generate significant savings in energy consumption and carbon emissions, reduce maintenance, and provide improved lighting for road users and communities. There will be further technological developments in the sector as the move to vehicle electrification intensifies.
The successful applicant will provide support to the Street Lighting team by assisting with the management, operation, design and development of the range of functions undertaken by the team.
The successful applicant will follow a structured training programme to develop their knowledge and skills in the field of street lighting, enabling progression to more senior roles in the team. The team sits within the highways department working in partnership with E. ON and Amey LG to deliver the majority of its highway operations. This will provide the successful applicant with both public and private sector experience.
What you’ll bring
You will need to be motivated, organised, able to prioritise, with a good level of computer literacy and attention to detail. Experience in street lighting is not required, but a technical background is helpful.
This role requires the ability to travel across Staffordshire and occasionally outside of Staffordshire. A Casual Car User allowance will apply to the role.
